NZPA-Reuter Londoi The United States, Sweden and Czechoslovakia were the first countries to clinch quar-ter-final places in the championship division of the Davis Cup on Saturday. For the United States John McEnroe and Peter Fleming crushed Vijay and Anand Amritraj 6-3; 6-1, 7-5, in the doubles to 'clinch a United States victory over India. McEnroe and Eliot Teltscher won their opening singles matches and the doubles victory gave the United States an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the best-of-five match series. Sweden’s young team, without the assistance of its top player, Bjorn Borg, took a winning 3-0 lead over the Soviet Union in Stockholm. Anders Jaerryd and Hans Simonsson came back from two sets down to win the doubles against Vadim Borisov and Konstantin Pugaev, 8-10, 3-6, 6-2, 8-6, 6-0. Czechoslovakia continued
•to roll over West Germany in Prague, winning the doubles for a decisive 3-0 lead. Pave] Slozil and Tomas Smid defeated the West Germans. Christoph Zipf and HansDieter Beutel, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4, to mark up Czechoslovakia's third win in straight sets in the first round tie. In Rome, Britain’s fortunes lapsed after it had taken a 10 lead over Italy on Friday and ended the second day, 12, down. Corrado • Barazzutti overwhelmed Britain’s Richard Lewis 11-9, 6-1, 6-1, in a match left unfinished oh Friday night at 8-8 in the first set. Then the veteran Italian pair, Adriano Panatta and Paolo Bertolucci, took command of the doubles to sweep aside Andrew Jarrett and Jonathan Smith 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Czechoslovakia will meet either France or Argentina in the quarter-finals, and Sweden’s opponent will be the United States.
In Buenos Aires France took a decisive step towards winning its tie against Argentina when its doubles pair of Yannick Noah anc Giles Moretton beat Guillermo Vilas and Alejandre Ganzabal. After a shaky start in which they lost the first set after building a 5-2 lead, they won 6-8, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, to give the French a 2-1 lead. The home fans had more to cheer about in Santiago where Chile edged 2-1 ahead of Rumania with a doubles win by Belus Prajoux and Jaime Fillol. They beat Florin Segarceanu and Andrei Dirzu 8-6, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. Australia’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals, however, took an unexpected body blow in Mexico City when their experienced doubles pairing of Phil Dent and John Alexander lost a marathon tussle to Raul Ramirez and Jorge Lozano. The Mexicans earned a 2-1 lead in the tie with a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5, 9-7 victory.
