Rugby sevens qualifiers
PA Wellington Southland and Marlborough yesterday won through to the finals next week of the national seven-a-side rugby tournament. They join Saturday’s firstround winners, Auckland, Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay, in the final round, which will be played in Feilding. Also in the finals will be Manawatu and Canterbury, who qualified automatically because there were no other
candidates in their regions. The national champion and Ranfurly Shield holder, Wellington, was among 14 of the country's unions not taking part in the tournament, which is being staged at the start of the season for the first time in an effort to attract greater interest from players and spectators. Southland beat Otago, 30-6, in ,the final of yesterday’s region eight round in Gore and in Nelson, Marlborough
beat Nelson Bays, 28-6. Two of Southland’s chief destroyers, Paul Macfie (who scored two tries) and Shane Gibbons, are both former Otago players. On Saturday Auckland — the sevens failure in the Hong Kong international series last year — beat Counties, 24-0, in the region one final, Hawkes Bay beat Pov-I erty Bay, 20-12, in region > four and Taranaki beat Wanganui, 4-0, in region three.
