Cash boost for tennis

The development of potential New Zealand Davis Cup tennis players will be accelerated by grants from the New Zealand Sports Foundation. The grants, totalling $15,000, and involving David Lewis, Bruce Derlin and Jeff Simpson, in a manager-coach role for Lewis, were announced by the Prime Minister, Mr Muldoon, at the Davis Cup dinner held last evening. Lewis will receive $6OOO, Simpson $6OOO and Derlin $3OOO towards the cost of a programme which is likely to exceed $35,000. The chairman of directors of the foundation, Mr Graeme Davy, said the foundation hoped to work closely with the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association in future to assist in the further development of young tennis players. The executive president of the New Zealand L.T.A, Mr lan Wells, said the grants would enable the association to do the best it could to fill the huge gap left by the pending retirement of Onny Parun. David Lewis, the outstanding Auckland 17-year-old, will become the first New Zealand tennis player to have a one-on-one situation. He will be managed, coached and counselled by Jeff Simpson for seven months this year.
