Air New Zealand

Sir,—l thank R. A. Dear for his reply (March 2) to my letter (February 27) which was prompted by the fact that after many flights in Friendships this was the first time I had encountered two stewardesses. Possibly the aircraft was one of the larger Friendships and because of the extra seats the Ministry of Transport. has decreed that two stewardesses should be carried. I still think this level of staffing is excessive for this size of aircraft, for safety or any other reasons, regardless of who makes the rules. As refreshments are not served the stewardesses appear to have little to do and spend most of the time chatting to the passengers. At say $6O per person-hour cost to the airline this does not seem a very efficient way to conduct a business. Perhaps Air New Zealand should take the matter of cabin staffing numbers up with the Ministry of Transport if it is really trying to reduce its losses. — Yours, etc., J. B. C. TAYLOR.
