PA Auckland A Vietnamese immigrant, Tuan Quoc Tran, was found not guilty of murder at the end of his trial in the High Court at Auckland yesterday. The jury took only 50 minutes to reach its decision. Mr Justice Speight discharged Tran, a factory hand, aged 23, of Hamilton, saying he agreed with the jury’s verdict. Tran pleaded not guilty to the murder of Tevita (David) Saifiti at a house in Glen Innes last September. When his trial began on Monday the Crown alleged that Mr Saifiti died from a stab wound.after an alterca-
tion between the two men. Tran told the Court that he acted in self-defence and had no intention of killing Saifiti. He said he spoke to Saifiti after seeing him pour beer over his girlfriend's head, and Saifiti punched him. Tran said his girlfriend had complained that she had been raped the previous evening by three of Saifiti's associates. , Mr Peter Williams, counsel for Tran, said Tran was a person of good character. He took the knife from his pocket after he was attacked by Saifiti who was a powerfully built man, truculent and menacing.
