Engineers’ new president

Professor R. F. Meyer, of Auckland, is the new president of the Institution of Engineers. He was installed during the engineers’ annual conference in Christchurch. Professor Meyer is Dear of the School of Engineering at the University of Auckland. He was appointed tc the chair of mechanical engineering at the university in 1968, and in 1980 accepted appointment as Dean of engineering, while retaining a personal chair in mechanical engineering.

Professor Meyer is also chairman of the , Energy Research and Development Committee, and of the newly formed Energy Advisory Committee. Last year he finished eight years as chairman of the Testing Laboratory Registration Council of New Zealand.

In his year of office Professor Meyer sees his main task as continuing to advocate the maximum use of New Zealand’s engineering resources in big energy projects now under way. He also believes that it is important to bring engineering resources together so that New Zealand can bid effectively against overseas competition. The vice-president for the next year is Mr E. R.
