Two young Canterbury helmsmen. Phil Penney and Kevin Jamie, have been included in the New Zealand team to compete in the world Laser class yachting championship in Sardinia in April. Penney and Jamie, both aged 19, earned their places during the national Laser contest at Lyttelton last month. Penney was the runner up to the world youth title-holder, Russell Coutts (Auckland) and Jamie was a very creditable eighth. A week earlier Penney had been tenth of 120 starters in the Australian championship. The eight New.Zealanders will be opposed by about 300

of the finest monotype skippers in international yachting in Sardinia, but Penney at least, has previous experience of massive fleets. He was sixteenth of 350 entrants in the last world contest in Cananda 18 months ago. An intensive few weeks of training now lies ahead of Penney and Jamie, leading up to their departure for Sardinia and participation in the first heat of the world series on April 4.

The other members of the New Zealand squad are Coutts. John Irvine (Otago). John Cutler (Auckland). Mark Page (Auckland). Rod Sayer (Otago) and Phil Douglas (Auckland).
