Judge hits back
PA Auckland Mr Justice Mahon asserted last evening that the Chief Inspector of Air Accidents, Mr R. Chippindale, had a predetermined and closed mind throughout the inquiry into the Mount Erebus DCIO crash. He was responding to Mr Chippindale’s criticism of his findings (see Page 2). Judge Mahon said that Mr Chippindale was entitled to sit through the inquiry with a
predetermined and closed mind. < . “I was aware that if I did. not accept the Air New Zealand management’s view of the cause of the disaster that was accepted by Mr Chippindale, I would be very unpopular in official circles,” he said. , “Being unpopular does not worry me.” . Judge Mahon said he might write a book on the whole . affair some day.
