Doldrum by Whistling Wind from the Sayajirao mare Say Magic, was a winner over a mile and a half in Ireland. Her only two foals to race. Lady Doldrum and Norfolk, have both been successful in Australia. It is the same family from which comes such outstanding gallopers as Belmont Bellypha and Bellman, all group winners in Europe and also Oncidium. which was three times leading sire in New Zealand and Australia.
The Mapperley Stud. Matamata. which have brought several of the higher-priced offerings over the opening two days of the sale, were successful in securing a stylish colt by Taipan II from Fair Behaviour for $21,000. A beautifully presented individual the' colt closely resembled his sire Vice Regal whose stock have been in keen demand during the past few days. Final bids of $19,000 were refused by the owners of a colt by Sir Tristram from the Man The Rail mare. Brave Lady, and also by the owners of the brother to Coober's Queen (Coober Prince—Dympnai. Both colts had a reserve of $20,000.
Altogether 145 of the 209 lots offered were sold for a total of $843,590. This is down from the corresponding day last year when 178 lots were sold for a total of $1,092,350. The average for yesterday's session was $5820 as against $6136 last year.
After a satisfactory beginning the sale lagged badly during the middle stages before picking up pleasingly during the final two hours. But for the high number of passings (approximately 30 per cent) and the lull during the middle stages, the sale achieved a satisfactory result.
