Union pressure succeeds
PA Wellington Trade union pressure to retain jobs for about 100 race-day workers has caused the Foxton Racing Club to reverse its plan to give their work to the Lions Club.
Last year the Lions approached the club for the work as part of a project to raise funds for a school swimming pool. The club consequently told its former ground work force that their labour would not be needed during the club’s fund-raising period beginning at the club’s meeting today. The decision would have eliminated regular earnings over many years for the usual workers, mainly pensioners. All are members of the Theatrical Worker's Union.
The union's secretary (Mr F. Thorn) said that while the club cut the Lions Club away from today’s races, it required the union to give reasons by mid-February as to why the Lions should not do the work at its May meeting. "We will not be giving reasons. The normal workers have award coverage, and the club must abide by the award.
“If it attempts to bring the Lions in for the May meeting. then we will haul it before the Arbitration Court for breaching the award, and let a judge spell out the situation.” Mr Thorn said.
The Foxton Racing Club secretary (Mr C. Pearce) said he was not prepared to comment.
