Care of pets
Sir. - Someone has said. "Cruelty to animals only increases’ the sufferings of man," and mankind appears to have fallen a way behind so-called dumb animals in showing love and loyalty, and to have wildly misinterpreted the words, "having dominion over." The dictionary meaning is to "guide
and control." not exploit and torture. Jesus described the "Christ-principle" as love, and God as love, a Creator, a principle, a force more powerful than any other, able actually to realign and harmonise thought and matter (as in healing). At this time of the year, particularly, remembering’love in action, it would be an impressive step forward if the churches, or the political fraternity. could see their way clear to passing a resolution to press immediately for doing away with the "right" to neglect. and inflict cruelty and torture on. animals.- Yours, etc.. NOELLE MILANOVICH. Januarv 13. 1982.
Sir. - Your leading article on neglected pets is worthy of a follow-up. Il is high time that some direct action was taken to arouse the public into doing something about it. instead of sitting back and sympathising in apathy. Organisations such as the S.P.C.A. are tireless in their efforts to combat cruelty to animals; but something more is needed to force the issue, if we want results. A strong and fearless campaign throughout New Zealand is a must. I for one, would welcome the challenge, provided that the financial support was forthcoming. I would be interested to hear, from the many animal lovers, their thoughts on a venture such as this.— Yours, etc..
