Surgery for Ovett

NZPA-Reuter London Britain’s Olympic 800 metres champion, Steve Ovett, has been injured in a freak accident and will be unable to compete in Australia and New Zealand next month. Ovett ran into church railings last week-end near his new home at the Sussex seaside resort of Hove,

where he moved recently from the north of England. A muscle above his knee was badly punctured, and the inside of his leg torn. Yesterday he underwent surgery in West Middlesex Hospital where a spokesman said his condition was “satisfactory.” Ovett’s leg will be in plaster for two weeks, and he faces a futher six weeks’

building up the affected muscle before he can resume training. This means he will have to abandon plans to run next month. Ovett has plenty of time to recover for the year’s main athletics events—the European championships in Athens in August and the Commonweath Games in Brisbane in September.
