Big offer to Weaver
NZPA-Reuter New York
The promoter, Don King, said in New York that he had made an offer of SUSI million (SNZI.2I million) to Mike Weaver, the World boxing Association (W.8.A.) heavyweight champion, to defend his title against either Renaldo Snipes or Jimmy Young. Snipes knocked down the champion, Larry Holmes, in the seventh round when he challenged for the World Boxing Council (W.8.C.) title on November 6, but was stopped by the title-holder in
the eleventh round. He is
ranked No. 7 contender by the W.8.C., but is not rated among the top 10 by the W.B.A. Young, who went the full 15 rounds with Muhammad Ali in a 1976 title bout, is ranked No. 6 contender by the W.B.A. and No. 8 by the W.B.C. King, a co-promoter of the Holmes-Gerry Cooney W.B.C. championship match in Las Vegas on March 15, said that he made his offer to Weaver in a telegram to the boxer’s manager, Mr Don Manuel.
