Poland to remain in World Cup

NZPA-Reuter New Delhi The Brussels-based International' Hockey Federation (F.1.H.) has asked the Indian organisers of the fifth World Cup hockey to replace Poland with Belgium, but the Polish team, already touring India, has said it had no instructions of returning home.

The secretary-general of the organising committee of the World Cup, Mr K. L. Passi, said from Bombay that he had received a message from the president of F.1.H., Mr Rene Frank, saying Poland should not take part in the championship because of the Polish crisis. He said the team manager, Mr Andrzej Zoladkowski, called him yesterday from Jullunder and said he had received no instructions from his Government to withdraw from the World Cup. He said Mr Zoladkowski asked the Indian organisers to send a message to F.I.H. to confirm Poland’s participation.

The team arrived in India a few days ago and has played some club-level matches. Today it will go to Pakistan to play a few matches and return to Bombay on December 26, three days before the World Cup is scheduled to begin. Mr Passi said he was sending a message to F.I.H. asking for a final decision on Poland’s entry.
