‘Professionalism’ of teachers
Sir,—Peter Joyce (November 11) was amused by my comments, at a meeting which he did not attend, about teachers and “professionalism.” In summer, I also teach in shorts. Indeed, in one school where I taught some years ago, the only way to tell the difference between a school prefect and a master was by the fact that the school prefects wore long trousers. However, Mr Joyce has missed the point: it is possible to wear shorts and not appear scruffy. At the meeting which Mr Joyce did not attend, I referred to “jeans and jandals” and I stand by my comment that anyone who is not prepared to dress neatly does not deserve the respect of either pupils, their parents or, indeed, of the public at large.— Yours, etc., JIM BAKER. National Party candi date for St Albans. November 11, 1981.
