Education system
Sir,—lt was interesting and “amusing” to me as a teacher to see your article, including comments made by the National Party candidate for St Albans, about the failure of our education system to cater for the needs of school leavers (November 7). Obviously this candidate and many others comment on subjects they do not understand. For example, “new” maths is suggested as being unsuccessful for school leavers. New maths has been in wide use for 15 years at least and involves the teaching of all the usual mathematical concepts and principles but also includes the development of a deeper understanding of these principles, unlike many of the earlier maths programmes. The name “new maths” is a misnomer; it is like calling a 1966 automobile a new model. Second, the suggestion that teachers undermine their own professional status by their dress sense mystifies me. Through my own primary,, secondary, university, teachers’ college and teaching experience I have never seen any of my teachers, lecturers or colleagues in jeans, jandals or any cornbination of either.—Yours, etc., J. D. STACKHOUSE (Mr). November 9, 1981.
