Fishing policy criticised

PA Wellington Social Credit’s . deputy leader, Mr G. T. Knapp, has criticised the Government’s decision to hold over any decision on joint-venture fishing for another year. “The New Zealand fish resource is enormous, and yet it is exploited totally by foreign boats while our New Zealand fishermen languish in shallow inshore waters, scratching to make a living,” he told an electorate meeting at Richmond, Nelson. Mr Knapp said Social Credit believed that fishing was in the top four of New Zealand’s growth industries for the next 20 years. ■ He said it was essential that low-cost investment capital was provided to develop it.
