Commission to shut
PA Wellington New Zealand will shut its High Commission in Port of Spain, capital of Trinidad and Tobago. Announcing this yesterday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Mr Taiboys) said that coverage of the Caribbean region would be provided by the High Commissioner in Ottawa. A Foreign Affairs spokesman said that the High Commission was closing because it was not needed there any longer. Most of the $46 million trade New Zealand
took to Trinidad and Tobago was handled by the producer boards, thus obviating the need for a trade office. The Trade and Industry Department seconds two staff to the commission, while a further six local people are employed, in the office. The saving should amount to almost $250,000, the spokesman said. “The decision marks no change in the status of our diplomatic relations with Trinidad and Tobago or other countries in the region,” Mr Taiboys said..
