Salary scales

Sir.—Teachers have decided to delay direct action in support of* their pay parity claim with the secondary service. Mr Wellington has assured us that he is concerned about the disparity and that an investigation will be held by the Government. Let' him be assured that primary teachers are vitally concerned at the disparity. Let him also be assured that delaying tactics and “political promises" especially in election year will satisfy us no longer. Five hundred primary teachers have moved into secondary service for better conditions and salaries since the 1977 Act, causing a downgrading and demoralising of the primary service. The reason and the remedy are obvious. If direct action is necessary it will be taken, and if a record of 93 years is to be broken, then so be it.—Yours, etc.,

J. S. LUKE. October 16, 1981
