An exquisite bone china figurine of a tui perched on a kowhai branch complete with flowers was the State gift to the Queen during the Royal tour. Regarded as priceless, the life-size piece was created by one of the world’s foremost china sculptors, Ricky Lewis, of Hamilton. This is the third of his sculptures to be presented to the Queen, but the first to be created in New Zealand since Mr Lewis transferred the Hereford Bone China Company from the United Kingdom. To guard against mishaps Mr Lewis created two identical pieces, one of which will now be destroyed.
