Duke commends service
PA Wellington Every adult gives service in the community in some way or has some hobby, the Duke of Edinburgh has told 100 young New Zealanders, ; after > presenting them , with the certificates for reaching ■the.gold level of..his award scheme. •’ ;.
‘‘l hope the thing you have learned is to take an interest in \other people and to put something into the community,” said Prince- Philip, after presenting. the/ certificates. He advised them to follow adults’ example and. work in the community; or take a hobby’ to keep themselves entertained. ,He had commended the number of people taking up jogging in an effort to keep the “spare .tyrfe” tin trim — “as long as 'they don’t overdo it.” -• “Every adult has some sort of Walter Mitty dream of sailing around the world — although they may just end up with a caravan. a couple of hundred miles down the road,” he said. Earlier, the Duke held a meeting with 30 former members. of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Commonwealth 1 Study Conference. The group included Sir Jack Hunn,.a former Secretary of Maori Affairs; Mr Noel Woods, a former Secretary of Labour; and 7 Mr F. A. Conlon. formerly of the Port Employers’ ’ Thegrouphad Represented New Zealand at conferences held, overseas '■ underthe. Duke’s ■ aegis? bringing ''together public administrators, industrial" - managers, and union leaders. ?■
