Second cup stolen
PA Hamilton The theft of an Auckland Cup from Matangi at the week-end is the second of its kind in the last few days. The cup. won in 1964 by the horse. Senor. has been taken from 78-year-old Mrs Ruby Robinson's Matangi home, near Hamilton.
This follows the theft of a Melbourne Cup, won by Baghdad Note, from Dunedin on Saturday morning. The gold Auckland Cup has been on Mrs Robinson’s mantlepiece since 1964 when Senor, trained by her late husband, Ivan, won the prestigious racing event. It was taken while Mrs Robinson was away for the week-end. her grandson, Mr Warren Robinson, said yesterday. The cup was discovered missing early on Sunday morning. Two smaller gold cups, also on display in the lounge, were not touched. The cup was the best trophy his grandfather had won and held special significance for his grandmother. Mr Robinson said.
The family was offering a reward for its return and the police in Hamilton are investigating the theft.
The cup stands about 55cm high, and has a handle on either side. It is inscribed with details of Senor’s win. A wooden base was not taken.
