Short cut to nowhere
NZPA-Reuter Miami Sunshine Mary, a three-year-old filly dubbed the world’s slowest race horse after a string of ignominious failures, will never finish last again. She died yesterday of a broken neck after apparently trying to leap the inside rail and take a short cut back to the stables during a race at Miami, track officials said. In April, stewards at another Florida track slapped a life ban on Sunshine Mary after she had finished last in 10 consecutive races. : ■
Recently she had been improving according to trainer John ValkaneL In , her? last race on August 20, she finished eighth in a field of 12.
