Child-care centres
Sir,—Christine Snodgrass (August 4) wrongly believes that the Christchurch City Council has asked the Government for finance to buy additional child-care centres. My committee, in a recent submission, has asked the Government to provide low-interest finance to those wishing to purchase child-care centres. It is in the community’s interest that existing services be continued. Therefore, I am concerned when an existing childcare centre is put on the market and a would-be purchaser is foiled by the high interest rates on the money which has to be borrowed. The result of the Government’s policy vacuum in this area is that services to families are placed at risk when a childcare centre goes up for sale. — Yours, etc., . CR D. J. ROWLANDS. Chairman. Community Services Committee. August 5, 1981.
