Baha’is in Iran
Sir,—lranian Government denials that Baha’is have been executed for their faith (“The Press,” August 3) conflict with that Government's own announcements in its official press, radio, and television. For example, on March 18, the Government newspaper “Jumhuriy-i-Islami” reported the execution of “a very active member of the Baha'i Assembly of Abadeh” because, he had “worked very hard in converting Muslims to Baha'is.” The many executions and constant extreme persecution have been reported by the 8.8. C., “The Times," and “The Bulletin” and have been condemned by the European and Canadian Parliaments and the Federation of Protestant Churches. The report’s reference to “Baha’ism. a breakaway Islamic sect” is in error. The Baha’i Faith has long been recognised as an independent world religion with its own founder (Baha’u’llah), scriptures, administration, and holy places. Though not officially recognised, Baha’is are the largest religious minority in Iran and are non-political and law-abid-ing.—Yours. etc..
J. S. LESTER. Vice-chairman Waimairi Baha’i Assembly. August 4, 1981.
