Improvements in Court of Appeal

Parliamentary reporter

The Court of Appeal has an improved fixtures list since it has sat in two divisions with the appointment of an extra judge in March, 1980, according to the Minister of Justice (Mr McLay). In the civil jurisdiction of the Court of Appeal, there was a delay of nd more than six months between the time of setting down an appeal and obtaining a hearing, he said.

This delay could be reduced if the parties asked for a priority hearing. In the criminal jurisdiction. an appeal was usually able to be heard two to three months after it was lodged, Mf 'McLay said.

Before the appointment of the . additional judge there had been a delay of 10 to 12 months in hearing civil cases and up to six months for criminal appeals.
