Freight forwarding award fears

The whole of the transport industry could become a party to. the bulk freightforwarders award if claims by the unions for an extension of coverage succeed in conciliation, says the director of the Canterbury Employers' Association (Mr N. M. ‘West). The award was unusual in that it applied only to the original parties cited, said Mr West. The Storemen and Packers' Union had tried to have three more companies included 12 months ago. but after submissions from the employers . these names had been struck from the award. "Now the union is aiming

to include a substantial, proportion of the transport industry," he said.

The award has “extremely advanced provisions” for wages, service pay. sick pay, rain money, and other allowances “which would generate enormous problems of relativity if they were forced on to companies other than the small group who, over the years, have negotiated the award and who presumably are able to live with it."

The secretary of the Canterbury Storemen and Packers' Union. Mr P. E. Piesse. said that the issues would be negotiated in conciliation council, not through the news media.
