Avonside I retains table tennis lead

Avonside I had a slender victory, by 16 games to 15, over Linwood, to maintain its twopoint lead at the top of the A grade table tennis competition at the Selwyn Street hall last week. It was a close tussle throughout. with the teams locked at 5-5, with one singles and one doubles match remaining. Maurice Burrowes then beat Michael Hamel in three games to give Avonside a narrow, but vital, edge. To salvage a point, Linwood’s final pair, Michael Prisk and Steven Dixon needed to beat Michael Burrowes and Bill Scott in straight games. However, the -Avonside duo won the opening game, 21-19, to ensure their team of the win. Dallington picked up its fifth win to take second position. It beat University. 7-5. after trailing. 3-1, after the first round of matches. However, four consecutive wins pushed it ahead, with Denis Kalin. Graham Condliffe ’ and John Gagliardi all having successes. In the middle section of the contest, University picked up just one game in the four matches. ft. was a night to ’’ remember forHAvbnside IV. which won its first match of the competition, beating Avonside 111, 7-5. Three doubles victories were a key factor in the win, while Glen Haszard and Brian Wilson each secured two singles wins. Avonside II Was too strong for Riccarton in’ the fourth contest.
