Sitting in a basket at the end of a crane seems to be a popular way of raising funds — if a little chilly at this time of year. Last week, two teams of schoolboys from Hornby High sat in the basket of a cherry picker for 48 hours to raise funds for Telethon.

On Friday, at 4 p.m., Trevor King will go up 60 metres in the air in an “air taxi” at the end of a craned high above the old Post Office car park in Cathedral Square. He hopes to stay there for 24 hours to raise funds for Telethon.

He has arranged sponsorship, and his fund-raising venture is on behalf of Solo Parents (Canterbury) Inc. On Friday afternoon, Ray Lewis, who organised the successful. Children’s Show last Saturday .night, has organised another event for Telethon. This time, it’s

called “Singalong ’81,” and it is being held in the Caledonian Hall, beginning at 1.30 p.m. Special guests will be the Santa Rosa Entertainers, and a collection will be taken for Telethon.

The Kaiapoi Krazy Kids, as they call themselves, will be having a 12-hour ping-pong-athon, beginning on Friday; Michael Collins and

three friends are having a sponsored pool-athon on Friday for 24 hours; and 12 children from the Jolly Jingles and Melody Makers singing group will be starting a 24-hour sponsored rollerskatathoh. .

The department of respiratory medicine at Princess Margaret Hospital is holding a “winter frolic” in the form of a dance at the Western Rugby Club Hall, in Westminister Street, in aid of Telethdn, and the Christchurch Contract Bridge Club is taking a collection for Telethon at its Mad Hatters’ fun evening at the club on Friday evening. David Sligh and Collin Farrell of New Brighton will be running from Kaikoura to Christchurch, beginning on Friday at 7 a.m. and hoping to arrive at the Town Hall on Sunday afternoon. They have arranged sponsorship fbr their marathon run and hope to raise between $2OOO and $3OOO for Telethon. Nuffield Kindergarten has

invted children from the Crippled Children Society pre-school centre, the Intellectually Handicapped Children Society pre-sehool centre, and young deaf children to a special Telethon fund-raising event on The children will all be sponsored per inch to make things. The Chisnalwood Intermediate Parent Teacher Association has organised a dance in the school hall on Friday night, and the Laredo dance band has given its time free, so that all the proceeds of the dance will be able to go to Telethon.
