Labour Party policy
Sir,—Mr Rowling states, “private sector interest is enthusiastic” about Labour’s carpet mills plan (“The Press,” May 26). It has not been usual for the Labour Party to issue policy statements supportive of private enterprise investment but alternatively if private enterprise really was economically interested in carpet manufacture, would they not have already moved in the direction of which they now allegedly enthuse? Why are existing carpet manufacturers not enjoying boom times rather than the slower sales they are experiencing internationally? If the market were there, then so too, would be the enterprising carpet industry expanding with the need. Over-production causes gluts, gluts cause market price declines allowing the taxpayer to then be subsidising the overseas purchaser of Labour’s carpet yarn.— Yours, etc.. WILLIAM . RICHARD- • ■ ..son:, . ' May 28, 1981. .
