Public v. private

Sir,—l support Alan Willens’s point of view about public v. private jobs. Really efficient productive jobs are created in a free market, when and where there is a demand for them and when there is profit to be made. Governments are concerned too often, not with efficiency and profit, but with creating’jobs at any expense, to lull us into a false sense of security. Both National and Labour are obsessed with the idea that only the Government can provide jobs, but this must be false. The Government can only get the finance for its jobs by printing more money, raising taxes, or increasing the Government debt. So. considering these factors are causing most of our problems, it is just not possible for Government job schemes to help us. There is an old saying that “if you want something done well, do it yourself,” and this definitely applies here. Governement work schemes are no substitute for good private enterprise. — Yours, etc.,
