Power costs

Sir—The National Party president. Mr A. G. Chapman, knows that the siting of the Marsden Refinery was a partly political decision, probably only agreed by Wellington interests after they were assured that the transport differential pattern would not be altered. South Island electricity and North Island natural gas (N.G.) are indigenous to their locations. If N.G. was supplied to Christchurch at the same price as it is in Lower Hutt, there would be some basis to Mr Chapman’s denial of the South Island claim for cheaper bulk priced electricity. If N.G. had been discovered in 1959 at Parnassus instead of Taranaki, would it not have been piped to the North Island by now? On the other hand, there has been little delay and much effort put into exporting South Island electricity at below world energy prices, in the form of aluminium ingots, even: to the extent of depriving the main local fabricator of local aluminium.—Yours, etc., PATRICK NEARY.
