Refuse station
Sir,—Last Friday’s feature article on the new Metro Refuse Station a’t Sockburn provided your readers with valuable information about an important new facility. There was, however, one inaccuracy which I would like to correct. Under the Metropolitan Refuse Scheme’s original staging, rubbish would have been transferred from the new Metro Refuse Station to Bexley tip until a metropolitan landfill site opened in 1986. However, it is the City Council’s policy — reaffirmed at its last meeting — that a new metropolitan landfill site should be opened as soon as practicable to enable Bexley tip to be closed by 1983. The city’s resource recovery programme will reduce the vob
ume of rubbish, but a landfill site will still be needed. — Yours, etc., D. C. CLOSE. Chairman, Works and traffic committee, Christchurch City Council. May 23, 1981.
