Youth training

Sir,—l applaud the National Party members’ fresh approach towards providing opportunities for all young people to take part in activities for moral, social and physical development. Outdoor education, endorsed by the Johnson Report, has become an important aspect of upper primary and secondary schools’ physical education programmes. Like Outward Bound however, it is often those who need it the least, who actually participate. The concept of ail young people. of differing races, persuasions, positions and futures working together in team efforts towards self-determined common goals is a positive approach towards achieving tolerance and understanding badly needed in our society. I believe it would be far better for public moneys to be spent in this sort of programme as a counter to picking up an increasing tab for aimlessness and crime, intolerance and misunderstanding.—Yours, etc., R. R. BAIN. May 26, 1981.
