, .Canterbury’s most recent badminton arrival, the national representative, Steve Wilson.- made a pleasing start to whdt will be a busy season for him by reaching the final of the Austin invitation singles event in Auckland last week-end. Wilson battled through a tough semi-final against the talented Philip Horne of North Shore, but could not overcome the energetic Aucklander, John Miles, and went down, 15-12, 7-15, 9-15, in the final. Miles had an easy passage through to the final. He com-
fortably beat Wanganui's Kevin Ross before winning his semi-final against the big left-hander, Ross Livingston, by default. Earlier in the competition, Wilson had thrashed another Canterbury player, Peter Whiting, 15-4,15-2. while Alison Ross, the third Cantabrian at the event, was also eliminated The women’s singles was won by the country’s second ranked player. Toni Whittaker, of Auckland, who beat the promising young North Shore girl, Katrin Blair, in two games.
