The front-markers had their dav • on-Saturday 'in professional cycling's Croftsi Memorial 48 km face at Leeston, sponsored bv the Leeston Hotel. ’ Trevor Small, a visitor from Greymouth for the event, had too strong a sprint for his co-markers from lllitnin. and his compact group never looked likely to have the race taken from it. After only two of the six. laps, it was unchallenged at the front, and the only bunch to make any inroads was the experienced group of 3min riders. For the second time in three weeks, fastest time went to the break bunch, with Chris Giddens, of the; newly-formed Nicholas Nickleby team, winning the honour for the first time. Clayton Yaxley and Owen AVylie followed him . in, and
the scratch bunch never really had much chance. , = Terry Gyde had a wheel collapse in the first 3 km. and Steve Doherty and Russell Nant. by themselves, had no. chance of catching or holding the four men on break. z Results:— Crofts Memorial 48 km—T. .Small (IP-min). 1:11:40. 1: R.
