‘Stupid’ picture splashed in British press

NZPA correspondent London Pictures of Prince Charles with a Tokoroa mill worker, Geoffrey Nighuis, in his “I’m with stupid” T-shirt were splashed in the British press yesterday. “Hi stupid, nice to see you,” the “Sun” captioned its picture. The Murdoch-owned tabloid reported: “Joker Geoff Nighuis dropped a right royal clanger. “He wore a cheeky T-shirt to meet Prince Charles . . . and ended up feeling prettystupid. "When the Prince wandered over for a chat, Geoff’s T-shirt message was loud and clear — ‘l’m with stupid.’ “Red-faced Geoff, aged 19, said:'‘He’s a nice guy. Next time I’ll wear a suit’.” The “Daily Mail” headlined its story: “A proper Charlie!” and ran the picture

of Geoff Nighuis and the Prince over three columns. “This is the moment factory worker Geoffrey Nighuis called Prince Charles stupid — and got away with it,” its story began. The “Daily Express,” which also carried a picture of the Prince being pecked on the cheek by Maine Bennion, aged 16, at Tokoroa, headed its report: “Geoff puts the finger on Charles.” The “Daily Star,” which had the biggest picture of all over five columns, captioned “Who, Me?” reported: “Timber mill worker Geoffrey Nighuis almost died of embarrassment when Prince Charles walked over and started chatting to him. “But luckily the Prince was not offended, just amused, by Geoffrey’s Tshirt, which proclaimed: ‘l’m with stupid’ — with a finger pointing straight at you-know-who?’ ■’
