Bacon factory to close
PA Wanganui Fifty-one people at the Wanganui Mild Cure Bacon Company will be made redundant when the factory closes in mid-June. Staff were told of the closing yesterday. For many, the prospect of re-employ-ment is said to be bleak. The only similar form of employment available in Wanganui would be at the Imlay freezing works, which is itself preparing for seasonal
The decision to close the bacon factory was made by the head office of the parent company, •W. and R. Fletcher, Ltd, which also controls the Patea, Westfield, and Tomoana freezing works. The company gave several reasons for the closing. These included increased transport costs, distance from markets, a downturn in local demand, the spiralling cost of pigmeats, and the constant expenditure needed to meet Ministry of Agriculture export requirements.
