Thackwell triumphant

The New Zealand driver, Mike Thackwell, won the European Formula Two championship motor race at Silverstone yesterday — but his triumph almost turned to disaster when .he tangled with his. team-mate .on the final lap. Thackwell, aged: 19,. survived. the early (Stages of the incident-packed 47-lap International Trophy ■ race and took the. lead from a Swiss driver, Jorg Leinhardt, at the half-way stage.

Thackwell then had an exhaust breakage on his Ralt and was caught by his British team-mate, Geoff Lees, running a lap behind, on the final circuit. As Thackwell headed for the finish, Lees, alongside him, suddenly lost control and spun off the track. “I thought I was racing for the lead, not trying to unlap myself,” Lees said. Two Italians, Ricardo Palleti and Teo Fabi, came second and third respectively in a pair of March cars.
