The top seed,. Ivan Lendl, of Czechoslovakia,; won . his first grand prix tennis tournament of the year yesterday when he beat the unseeded New Zealandr, Chris Lwis, 6-3, 6-0, 6-7, 6-3, in the West German indoor championship. Lendl, ranked fifth in the

world, set out at breakneck speed and looked set for a comfortable straight sets win, but Lewis, who at one stage conceded 11 consecutive games, fought back to win the third set on a tiebreaker. •

Lewis, however, was unable to match Lendl’s, flair, and one service break in the fourth set cost him the match.
