Union meetings to discuss tour
The Tramway Workers’ Union, whose members drive local authority buses, will decide whether to take action against the Springbok tour after meetings of branches are held in the next few weeks. The national president of the union, Mr G. Froggatt, told “The Press” from Auckland that the national council had discussed the tour but had not yet formulated a policy. The Federation of Labour's policy was to oppose the tour, and the branches would discuss the tour on that basis, he said. The Christchurch branch'
secretary, Mr M. Dawson, said that Christchurch members would discuss the tour at the next meeting in May. The Transport Board has already decided not to supply special buses to Lancaster Park during the Springboks match in Christchurch. The Hotel Workers’ Association, whose members could cause most disruption to a Springbok tour, will make its decision on the tour at its national conference in Wellington on April 7,8, and 9. The association’s affiliated unions have members in 'hotels and restaurants.
