No juice stall for Square
A stall selling freshly pressed orange juice would be welcome in central Christchurch, but not in Cathedral Square, the Christchurch City Council’s health and general committee decided yesterday. Most of the councillors agreed that the Square could become cluttered with commercial ventures if too many concessions were granted. They indicated that the fruit and flower waggons already there should probably be paying more money for their prime sites. That could be considered when their leases expired in a year.
Cr C. E. Manning said, "I can think of a number of worthy commercial activities that ccald fill the Square.” Cr A. J. Graham said that there might be a future area in the Square, perhaps in front of the old Chief Post Office, where such activities could be located. Cr Helen Garrett said, “Any other good-sized town that calls itself a town has something like this.” An Auckland company wants to sell the juice in the Square. The company already runs a juice extractor in a'public square off Queen Street, Auckland.
