Angola

Sir,—David Lamb speaking of Angola says that an estimated 5000 Russians, military and civilian, are stationed in Angola. The Angolans supply them with oil in exchange for arms. Many top men say their future does not lie with Russia. David Lamb thinks that the Soviet Union needs Angola as an important springboard for influencing events in Southern Africa. Mr Lamb was given permission to travel 5000 kilometres through Angola for his newspaper, a rare privilege for a Westerner. His words ring true. Yours, etc., F. ROSS. March 23, 1981.
