Union ban on lifting of rail track

PA New Plymouth A union ban would be put on the railway track now being dismantled between Opunake and Kapuni, said the general secretary of the National Union of Railwaymen, Mr D. C. Goodfellow. Dismantling of the 35km track began on December 15 by an Auckland firm, Burrell’s Demolition. Mr Goodfellow said that the ban would prevent the Railways from recycling the track. The line, which was closed in July, 1976, had been included in the union’s national ban last year on dismantling branch lines. The union would keep a close watch on the movement of the dismantled tracks to ensure that they were not handled by union members.
