Jones wins Aust. G.P.
NZPA . Melbourne The world motor racing champion, Alan Jones, yesterday achieved a - burning ambition — he followed his father, Stan, and won the Austalian Grand Prix.
Second was the Italian, Bruno Giacomelli, with . Didier Pironi, of France, third.
Jones won the start from pole position ahead of Giacomelli's Alfa Romeo. The slower cars and short circuit made it difficult work for the Formula One stars. After only a handful .of laps Jones ' and Giacomelli began lapping the tail-enders and the Italian shot to the lead when Jones became boxed in by. the traffic. He failed to see the flying Alfa and moved across : the circuit to cause a clash of tyres with Giacomelli but both recovered. - Jones regained the . lead on lap 37 and that was it. Giacomelli struck mechanical trouble shortly after and Jones lapped him five laps from the finish. Pironi finished several laps behind — his borrowed Formula 5000 Elfin was nowhere near as quick as the Formula One cars.
The first local driver home was Alfie Costanzo, of Melbourne, in fourth position.
Jones wins Aust. G.P.
