Stead’s valuable contribution
The all-round ability of the Canterbury Shell series cricketer, David Stead, was most evident on Saturday when he played a significant role in Town’s gaining a commanding position against Country at Hagley Oval. However, rain yesterday forced the second day of the match to be abandoned and prevented Town from pressing home its advantage. In the disappointing first Innings of 84 by Country, Stead claimed three wickets for one run and took three catches in slips from the bowling of Craig Thiele. He followed that with an unbeaten half century. Only an opener, Alan Devlin, who almost batted through the order for 35 arid Phil D’Auvergne, reached double figures against a steady Town bowling attack. The big East-Shirley me-dium-fast bowler, Thiele, had an excellent second spell in which he took four for 12 off seven overs and there was good backing from Steve McNally and Stead, who brought the innings to a swift end. David Dempsey wasted no time in taking to the Country bowlers and he and Vaughan Brown were associated in a second-wicket partnership of 89 in only 40 minutes. Dempsey, Brown and Stead all batted attractively and made significant scores. However last year’s Canterbury captain, Cran Bull continued his lean trot, being bowled by Harvey King for seven.
