Local body elections

Sir, — Referring to the Labour Party use of scrutineers in the local body elections last Saturday, Mrs H. L. Garrett (October 15) says the Citizens Association is “quite unable to make use of such sophisticated techniques” — really? Its Parliamentary counterpart, the National Party, has 'used a similar method, plus extensions, for some years (with obvious success). As a longtime member of the National Party, and a past Parliamentary candidate, Mrs Garrett must be aware that her party first developed and perfected this “sophisticated technique” in New Zealand. It must be a bit galling to be beaten at your own game. — M. T. MOORE. October 15, 1980.

(Questioned about this letter, Mrs Garrett replied: “I referred to the combined use of scrutineers and a central Labour Party computer, I repeat, the Citizens’ Association has no access to such expensive gadgetry. For me personally, it was the first time I had ever seen a party political machine in operation at a local body (or any other) election. I am not an active member of the National Party, and it is now 14 years since I stood — as a gesture — in. Sydenham against the late Miss Mabel Howard).”
