Nuclear ships

Sir, — Die Truxtun’s visit was followed immediately by the New Zealand tour of a recently-retired, high-ranking American foreign official. In “The Press” today the new Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr Mervyn Norrish, who,

for the past two years, was New Zealand’s Ambassador to the United States, urges us to stop protesting about nuclear warship visits. He describes the United States as if it were our benefactor in security, trade, tourism, technology, and education. Are we being conditioned to be a United States state or to be a base for the next United States war? The United States is skilled in fighting wars on others’ territory — Korea, Vietnam, Iran (?), the Olympic games. Those prepared to follow Mr Norrish’s urgings should ponder allegations of C.I.A. involvement in Jonestown deaths (ibid, page 23) and recall previous C.I.A. involvements.. Nuclear friend-, ship is more likely to lead to our death than to our prosperity or security. — Yours, etc., B. ROBERTS. October 22, 1980.
