Telford chasing $250,000

PA Auckland The long-distance runner, Max Telford, will win $250,000 if he gains first place in the 3500-mile Los Angeles-to-New York road race next ApriL

Telford spends much of his time in Honolulu these days, but he is making a short visit to New Zealand for business reasons.

Details are still unknown about the United States crossing. Telford does not

know who is opponents will be,- but the runners will compete only , by invitation. The runners will line up at the start line each morning over a set stage. Computers will’ be used each day. • Already Telford is seeking more details. He believes the longer the daily stages the better will be his prospects. The Aucklander will be especially keen, not only to win a . quarter of a million dollars, but to make amends

for one of his few long-dis-tance setbacks.

A few years ago he at« tempted a lone crossing of the United States, but was forced to withdraw because of shin soreness. The over-all purse of a million dollars has been billed as the largest single prize package-in the history of sport—apart from boxing? Telford also hopes to make the Alaska pipeline run (800 miles) next July.
