Four injured in plane crash
PA Hamilton Four persons were injured, two of them seriously, when a light aircraft crashed into a hillside soon after take-off from Taumarunui Airport about 2 p.m. yesterday. The pilot, Bruce Galloway, aged 38, a farmer, of Waimaha, and Neil Amourgis, aged 39, of Pio Pio, were seriously injured. Also injured but reported to be in a satisfactory condition were the pilot’s son, James Galloway, aged 15, and Brian Aldridge, aged 24, of 46 Hospital Road, Te Kuiti.
The aircraft, a Cessna 185 owned by Mr Galloway, was a write-off. According to Sergeant Clive Cosfort. of the Taumarunui police, the aircraft rose into the hillside and its tail snapped off. He
was astonished that anybody survived.
The injured were flown to Taumarunui Hospital. 7km away, by a local helicopter operator, Ross Harvey, in three trips within an hour of the crash. They were attended at the scene by a doctor who was picked up at the airport by the helicopter. Mr Galloway and his patty had been attending an aero club event at Taumarunui Airport. They took off with another light aircraft to rendezvous for an eight-aircraft flypast over Taumarunui. according to Sergeant Cosfort.
People in the other "aircraft saw the Cessna crash on steep open farmland about 3km north of the runway. The cause of the crash was not known last evening.
